Sightseeing in Seattle and Adventures in Alaska Day 7 - Juneau

23 Sept

Our last day visiting Alaska

We had yet another early start today, our alarm went off at 0600 and we were at breakfast at 0700. We both had omelettes with toast plus I had a cinnamon roll (which is the only item pictured as I think there are enough photos of omelettes).

It was very wet today (but we had been very lucky with the weather until now) and we headed ashore to our bus to the Mendenhall Glacier.

We were very glad that we had brought waterproof trousers, shoes and ponchos in addition to our normal coats.

About 30 mins later we arrived at the Glacier, we headed into the visitor centre as it was still raining heavily, we had already been reminded that we were in the largest temperate rainforest remaining in the world.

There was a video showing how the glacier had retreated over many years (the lake which you see in front of it wasn’t there when the visitor centre was built) which we watched before buying a magnet to add to our collection

By now the rain was less torrential so we went to take photos and have a quick look around, we didn’t have enough time to walk any of the trails which was a shame.

Back on the bus and we arrived at the Salmon hatchery where they release over 1 million salmon every year.

This is an attempt to photo a sealion!

They explained how this helps to keep the fishing industry more sustainable, we also learned that Salmon typically are born, spawn and die within a really specific area despite the fact they migrate away for up to 5 years in the middle.

There are around 250,000 fish in this one photo!

We were taken back to town and we dropped off a few of our things on the ship before exploring Juneau (it wasn’t quite as wet so we didn’t need our ponchos).

We went to a few of the shops, buying some fudge and a Juneau magnet before looking for somewhere to have lunch.

We found the Heritage Coffee Shop where we had: grilled cheese and turkey club plus hot chocolates and an oatmeal raisin cookie.

When we exited we found there was significant rain again so we made our way back to the ship trying to stay as dry as possible.

We also picked up a sign from the Red Dog Saloon which is going in the garden bar!

We got back to the ship and grabbed a hot drink on the way back to our cabin where we had a rest while we watched the sail away.

Dinner tonight was wild mushroom consommé to start then I had duck and Rob had short rib.

I had apple pie and Rob had the Royal chocolate cake for our desserts, everything was brilliant as always….although my waistline still hasn’t recovered!
